How do I protect myself from UPI related fraud?

UPI, the quick and easy way to transfer funds from different bank accounts, can also be misused by fraudsters to scam you. Here are 5 ways you should learn to protect yourself from such fraud:

    2. Remember that if money has to be credited to your bank account, you will never be asked for a PIN. Do not share your confidential details with anyone.
    3. Beware of requests for money transfers or coupon payments – you will never be asked to transfer any amount in order to receive credit – such requests are attempts to defraud you.
    4. If you receive a request from an unknown account, you are likely to get a spam warning from the UPI app. Be mindful of the option you are selecting, i.e., either ‘Pay’ or ‘Decline’. Please decline a request if you suspect fraud.

    6. Follow safe practices and keep track of your financial transactions and bank account statements, and an eye out for suspicious behaviour on your account.

How do I protect myself from OTP fraud online?

An OTP or One Time Password is an added security measure that involves a two-step authentication for your online transactions. This time-bound OTP has become a very popular option for most financial transactions.

Owing to the growing popularity, it faces a corresponding increase in threats from fraudsters, who try to steal your OTP in order to compromise your account, make unauthorized financial transactions or even cause identity theft.

In most cases, OTP fraud occurs when either your phone is infected by a malware or when you are duped into revealing the OTP to a fraudster on call/sms/email, under the false promise of helping with a transaction or providing better services.

Please exercise caution while using links embedded in an SMS or short (bitly) links when you are unsure about the source of the message or the sender. Clicking these links can corrupt and compromise both your phone and the OTP without you realising it.

Citi or its employees will never ask for your credit or debit card details, including confidential information like your card number, card expiry date, CVV, OTP or internet password. Do not share these details with anyone as this could lead to fraud. Bank safely with Citi.
