Steps to take when your credit card is lost or stolen
Using a credit card to make purchases is typically safe. However, even the most conscientious cardholder can be at risk of losing his/her credit card either due to misplacement or theft. Nothing quite compares to the stress of losing a credit card. You are not alone in getting that sinking feeling when you realise that your credit card has been lost or stolen.
The steps you take right away can go a long way toward limiting the damage that a potential miscreant can do with your credit card.- Make copies of each of your cards, and note down the respective issuer's phone number in case you need to contact them.
- Store this information in a safe location and make sure to take it with you when you travel.
- Store this information as far as possible from where you keep your credit cards.
If your credit card is lost or stolen, follow the the below steps.
1. Report the stolen credit cards to your bank immediately
Most card issuers are available 24/7 to assist you with reporting your lost credit card. You can browse the net for your bank’s phone numbers or can find them on your billing statements. Keep all relevant documents handy in case you need to answer any specific questions. Document who you spoke with, the date, time and context of the conversation, and any follow-up if any.
2. Call the credit bureau
If your card is stolen, call the credit bureau and request that a fraud alert be placed on your credit profile. You should also review your current credit report to ensure there are no other instances of credit card fraud. Should you find any information to be incorrect, notify the credit bureau immediately.
Now that you have reported your lost card, your credit card company can take the necessary steps to replace it. Your account won’t be cancelled, and the old card will no longer be associated with your account. Before you know it, you will get your replacement card and your lost card will become just a bad dream.
